When to transport rather than tow

Towing is fastest over short distances. A low-loader is the better choice in these cases.

Long distance

Beyond 100–150 km a low-loader is safer and often cheaper than towing.

Cannot be towed

Damaged gearbox, axle or steering: the truck travels on its wheels without driving.

Accident damage

Moves to a truck body shop or assessment site, secured around the damage.

Repatriation

Bringing a truck stranded in France back to its home base or dealer.

Buses and coaches

Broken-down or refurbishment moves, planned around the vehicle height.

New and used trucks

Delivery of a purchased tractor unit or rigid with no added mileage.

Route planned around the loaded height (bridges, tunnels). Lower rates on long distances when an empty return is avoided.

On French motorways the approved recovery operator for that section is assigned and sets its own rates above 3.5 t: this estimate covers off-motorway jobs and the onward move once you have left the motorway.

The right trailer for the job

  • Low-loader semi-trailer for tractor units, heavy rigids, buses and coaches, with ramps and winch.
  • 19–26 t flatbed for light and medium rigids, quicker to dispatch.
  • Chains and tensioners on manufacturer lashing points, wheels chocked.
  • Route survey: a loaded tractor unit can exceed 4 m in height, so low bridges and tunnels are avoided and abnormal-load rules applied when required.

Truck transport from France: FAQ

How much does it cost to move a truck on a low-loader?

A loading and securing fee plus a per-km rate, with a minimum of €1,190 excl. VAT for a light truck and €1,990 for a rigid or tractor unit. Rates drop on long distances when an empty return is avoided. Use the estimator for a price based on distance.

Towing or low-loader: which is better?

Towing suits short distances to a nearby workshop. Beyond roughly 100–150 km, or when the vehicle cannot be towed (damaged gearbox, axle or steering), low-loader transport is safer and often cheaper.

Can you repatriate a truck from France?

Yes, on request: repatriation of trucks and coaches between France and neighbouring countries, including the UK via the Channel ports. Give us the pick-up address, destination, vehicle condition and dimensions.
